I Replaced My Monzo Pots With Starling Spaces for 60 Days — Here's What Actually Broke

TL;DR — After 60 days on Starling, three of my Monzo automations didn't translate — Salary Sorter, pot-based rules, and per-pot direct debits. Starling has better insights and reliability, but Spaces can't act as direct debit sources. I've settled on a hybrid: Monzo for cash flow, Starling for savings.

Two months ago I moved my entire bills-and-savings architecture off Monzo and onto Starling. Not the fun "let's open a second account and see" experiment — the full thing. Salary, five direct debits, three standing orders, round-ups, the lot. I wanted a real answer to monzo pots vs starling spaces in 2026, not another marketing-page comparison.

Here's the honest verdict after 60 days: Starling Spaces are structurally more powerful, but three of my Monzo automations don't cleanly translate, and one Starling limitation nearly caused a direct debit to bounce on day 34. I've moved back to a hybrid setup. Full breakdown below.

What is the actual difference between Monzo Pots and Starling Spaces?

Monzo Pots and Starling Spaces both ringfence money inside your current account, but they behave differently at the plumbing level. Pots can pay bills directly (each pot acts almost like a sub-account for direct debits). Spaces cannot — they hold money, and Starling pulls from your main balance when a bill lands. That single design choice cascades into everything else.

Monzo lets you set a Pot as the "bills pot" and route specific direct debits at it. Starling's Bills Manager does something similar in feel, but the money still lives in the main account until the debit clears — a Space is more of a savings label than a payment source. If you've built your life around Monzo's Salary Sorter dropping cash into named Pots that then pay bills directly, prepare for a rethink.

Why did I switch in the first place?

Interest. Starling was paying a better AER on in-app balances at the time I moved, and I wanted Goals inside Spaces (a Monzo Pot doesn't let you set a target with a nudge). I'd also read enough Reddit threads praising Starling's business-grade reliability that I wanted to test the "boring bank done properly" claim.

Fair play — the reliability claim held. Zero app outages in 60 days. Monzo had one wobbly Sunday evening in the same window. Small thing but noticeable when you're checking a balance while waiting for the kettle to boil.

The three Monzo automations that don't translate

Salary Sorter, IFTTT-style pot rules, and per-pot direct debits all break or degrade when you move to Starling. I'll take each one in turn because these are the exact things that caught me out.

1. Salary Sorter. Monzo's Sorter is genuinely elegant — payday lands, money splits across named Pots by amount or percentage, done. Starling's equivalent is Bills Manager plus manual Space transfers. You can schedule transfers into Spaces on a fixed date, but if your salary lands a day early (mine does about 30% of the time thanks to weekends), the transfer still fires on the scheduled date. Which means the money sits in the main balance for 24 hours, tempting fate. Monzo triggers off salary detection. Starling triggers off the calendar. That's a meaningful difference if you're an over-thinker like me.

2. Pot-based rules. Monzo lets you do things like "round up all card spending into the Holiday Pot" and "move 1% of every deposit into the Emergency Pot". Starling has round-ups (into one Space) and that's roughly it. If you're layering multiple round-up destinations or percentage-of-income rules, Starling will feel bare. I ended up using Chip alongside Starling to replicate one of the automations, which sort of defeats the point.

3. Per-pot direct debits. This is the big one. On Monzo I had my council tax coming out of a dedicated Council Tax Pot, my energy DD out of the Bills Pot, and Netflix out of the Subs Pot. Isolated. Predictable. On Starling everything comes out of the main balance. Bills Manager will tell you what's coming and reserve the amount visually, but reservations aren't the same as sub-accounts. On day 34 my main balance dipped closer than I liked to a DD threshold because two spaces had gobbled up cash I mentally thought was still free. Nothing bounced, but it was a wake-up call.

What is the one Starling feature I now miss in Monzo?

Starling's Spending Insights are quietly better than Monzo Trends, especially the merchant-level view. When I click into Tesco on Starling, I see every transaction, average basket size, spend by weekday, and year-on-year comparison in one screen. Monzo's Trends does the top-line category thing brilliantly, but drilling into a single merchant feels like more taps than it should.

I also miss Starling's Bills Manager "projected balance" chart — a little line graph showing what your account will look like on any given day for the next 30 days, factoring in all scheduled DDs and standing orders. Monzo shows upcoming payments in a list. Starling draws you a picture. For anyone who thinks visually about cash flow, that chart is worth switching for on its own.

What was the real cost of switching mid-month?

About £14 in duplicate subscription charges, six hours of admin, and one very tense Wednesday evening. I moved mid-month because that's when I made the decision, and mid-month switches are the worst possible time. Direct debits had already been claimed against Monzo; the same suppliers hadn't yet updated to Starling; two subscriptions billed both accounts because I didn't cancel on Monzo before the new payment authority went live.

I got the £14 back after politely emailing the suppliers, but the friction was real. If you're planning to switch, do it three working days after payday and immediately after your subscriptions bill. Or use the direct debit audit approach I've written about before to line everything up first. Don't just yank and pray.

I also used Emma to catch the duplicates within 48 hours — its cross-account view flagged them faster than either bank's app did.

What Starling still can't do (and it's not small)

Starling has no equivalent to Monzo's Salary Sorter, no percentage-based auto-transfer rules into Spaces, no IFTTT integration, and no way to make a Space act as a genuine direct debit source. These aren't nice-to-haves — for anyone running a layered automation stack, they're the entire point.

Starling also caps Spaces at 20 per account. I hit 14 within a week and started to feel the ceiling. Monzo's practical limit is much higher, and Pots can be locked, scheduled, hidden, sorted, and colour-coded in ways Spaces still can't match.

Which app should you actually use in 2026?

Use Monzo if your money life runs on automation rules and Pot-based bill routing. Use Starling if you want cleaner insights, better reliability, and one solid savings pot with interest. Most people don't need both — but if you can tolerate two apps, the hybrid I've landed on is Monzo for cash-flow automation and Starling as the interest-earning savings destination that I pull from once a month.

If you're deciding between all three UK challengers, I'd still point you at my longer Monzo vs Starling vs Chase comparison — this post is deliberately narrower.

My final setup after 60 days

  • Monzo: salary lands here, Salary Sorter splits into Bills Pot, Council Tax Pot, Subs Pot, and Spending. Direct debits route from Pots.
  • Starling: receives one standing order per payday — the savings amount — which sits in a Goal-tracked Space earning interest.
  • Chip: pulls small AI auto-saves from Monzo main into a separate savings pot.
  • Trading 212 Cash ISA: monthly standing order from Starling for the interest-plus-tax-shelter combo.

Boring? Yes. Working? Also yes.

FAQs

Can Starling Spaces pay direct debits like Monzo Pots?

No. Starling Spaces hold money and label it, but direct debits are always paid from your main balance. Monzo Pots can be set as the payment source for specific direct debits, which is a real structural difference.

Is Starling better than Monzo for savings in 2026?

Starling is better if you want higher in-app interest and cleaner Goal tracking. Monzo is better if you want multiple pots with per-pot direct debits and automation rules. For a pure savings destination, Starling wins.

How long does it take to switch from Monzo to Starling?

The Current Account Switch Service takes seven working days end-to-end. But rebuilding your automations, pots, and bill routing realistically takes another two to three weeks of tinkering to feel right.

Do I need both Monzo and Starling?

Only if you want the best of both — Monzo's automation for cash flow, Starling's Space for interest-earning savings. Most people can pick one and be fine. Running both costs nothing but adds mental overhead.

What happens to my Monzo pots when I switch to Starling?

They stay exactly where they are until you close the account. Nothing auto-migrates — Spaces and Pots are separate systems. Empty and close Pots manually after your CASS transfer completes, or leave the Monzo account open as a secondary.
